Here Comes Santa Claus (To the Big Screen, That Is)

Round, ruddy, and jolly is everything we expect Ol’ Saint Nick to be. (His ability to squeeze into chimneys included, of course.) But what happens when the citizens of Tinseltown don the red suit? Here’s a list of Hollywood’s famous Santa Clauses.

Jim Carrey in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. What’s furry, fat, and mean? It’s the Grinch, the outcast of Whoville! He is at turns funny and repulsive, yet beating beneath all that moss-coloured mass is a vulnerable heart. Based on the book by Dr. Seuss.

Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in White Christmas. In a song-and-dance extravaganza, two war buddies look svelte and smart in their Santa suits as they twirl around their similarly garbed sweethearts.

Tim Allen in The Santa Clause. A ballooning stomach, a lengthening beard, and a head full of whitening hair are just some of the things Scott Calvin has to put up with when he accidentally kills Santa and becomes the replacement. Wonder when Santa Clause 4 is coming out.

Edward Asner in Elf. Will Ferrell plays a human raised by elves in the North Pole. Comedy ensues when Santa allows him to look for his birth father, who has gotten into the “Naughty” list, in New York City.
