Cruising the Christmas Airwaves

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has released its list of the 25 most performed holiday songs for the past five years. Here are ten of them:

  1. Winter Wonderland – Written by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith
  2. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) – Written by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells
  3. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – Written by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin
  4. Sleigh Ride – Written by Leroy Anderson and Mitchell Parish
  5. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town – Written by Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie
  6. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Written by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne
  7. White Christmas – Written by Irving Berlin
  8. Jingle Bell Rock – Written by Joseph Carleton Beal and James Ross Boothe
  9. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – Written by Johnny Marks
  10. Little Drummer Boy – Written by Katherine K. Davis, Henry V. Onorati, and Harry Simeone

According to a poll by MSN Music in December 2007, however, “Merry Xmas Everybody” by English rockers Slade tops the list of holiday favourites in the UK, followed by “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (What the…?) by Queen. Online betting for the most requested song in the UK this Christmas has “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues as its top pick.

Of course, we’re partial to “The Chipmunk Song” ourselves.
