Christmas in Paris

Christmas isn’t supposed to be the most romantic time of the year, but how can it be otherwise when you spend it in one of Europe’s most romantic cities?

Christmas shopping is absolutely fun in Paris, where dramatic window displays and designer items abound. The giant Christmas tree at Galeries La Fayette is a must-see, and the Christmas markets from La Defense all the way to Champs-Elysees are not to be missed.

The French people certainly know how to prepare a Christmas feast, with blow-out meals on Christmas Eve featuring fresh oysters, creamy foie gras, smoked salmon, and hearty chapon,/i> (roast chicken), turkey or goose. Delectable Christmas treats such as chocolatey Bûche de Noël (Yule log) best washed down with champagne tease holidaymakers’ taste buds.

This romantic city gets even dreamier during the Christmas season as Champs-Elysees twinkles at night with beautiful Christmas lights. Stroll hand in hand with your paramour in the Rue de Rivoli, Montmartre, and Saint Germaine. Seal the Christmas night with a kiss under the glow of the Eiffel Tower or along the illuminated bridges over the Seine.

Enjoy quality time with the kids at Paris’ merry-go-rounds, which can be found in every arrondissement of the city. Take the kids to a ride over the colourful and wooden manèges de Noël (horse-gears of Christmas) in Place de l'Hôtel de Ville or Place Saint-Sulpice, and gather the family to the early midnight mass at Notre Dame de Paris and Montmartre’s Sacre Coeur. The traditional Eglise de la Madeleine midnight mass which ends at 12:45 am is also a must.
