Christmas in Bethlehem… Pennsylvania!

Founded on the Christmas Eve of 1741 by the Moravians, a Slavic ethnic group, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is now home to about 72,000 residents. This history is retold at the Moravian Music Christmas presentation, accompanied by a pipe organ, a brass band, and a choir. Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is another highlight on the calendar, performed by talents from the Pennsylvania Youth Ballet.

A circus, opera, and ballet performance all in one, Cirque is a new offering this year. Acrobats, clowns, jugglers, and other circus characters will keep everyone entertained. More shows are on thanks to the Touchstone Theatre, with shows like “Totally Scrooged!,” where one man plays all the roles in this Charles Dickens classic. Another timeless production is “Christmas City Follies,” where music meets wit with wacky results.

More melodies will send you to new heights at the Bach Choir Christmas Concert held in the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. At the Central Moravian Church, the Advent Organ Concert welcomes guests for free. Favourite Yuletide carols are part of the repertoire.

Its Christkindlmarkt is also brimming with action, offering wares such as hand-painted glass ornaments, dolls made of polymer clay, watercolour paintings, beaded jewellery, and knitted garments filling up its stalls. Everything from birdhouses to soy candles finds its way here.
